The Myth of “Viral” Video

Clients often approach us asking for “a viral video” which will live on their website or YouTube channel and generate massive amounts of traffic for them.  They have usually been told viral video is the best way to get a ton of free press for their company.  Usually they expect their viral video to be done with little or no budget, using talent from the company.  We most likely tell them we simply can’t do that.

Viral Video is a myth.  It doesn’t exist in the way that popular wisdom seems to present it.  The factors that make a video “viral” are uncertain impossible to consciously replicate.  Working towards a viral video turns what could be a thoroughly planned, well executed campaign of promotion into a complete gamble.

The AV Society streams Ümloud!

Each year, in San Francisco, a huge group of geeks of all varieties joins together over Rock Band to support a great cause.  Ümloud! is a not for profit organization that arranges the biggest Rock Band night in the city to give fans of the game, and music in general, an opportunity to show their skills on a live stage in front of a crowd, while donating to charity supporting children’s hospitals.

In 2011 we were approached to stream the event to the web and we did so in proper AV Society style, by shooting in full HD, streaming for upwards of 5 hours straight, and hosting a two hour long pre-show to promote internet donations and provide sponsors and supporters of the event a moment to shine.  In addition to providing crew, equipment, expertise and show planning, we helped broker a broadcast partnership with CBSi / GameSpot.com, one of the largest video game media outlets.  This brought the broadcast to many thousands of viewers that normally would not have seen the show, or donated to the cause.
